Field Notes

Written and published by The National Sporting Library & Museum, 2021

Field Notes was published by The National Sporting Library & Museum as a catalog for the 2022 Matia Exhibition at the Museum in Middleburg, VA. The exhibit incorporated areas integral to the Museum and its mission: fine art and field sports, as well as land and water conservation. It is Walter’s story of sculpture, the works of an artist, hunter and naturalist. It was an artistic and  creative display both inside the museum gallery and throughout the beautifully landscaped grounds. The forward is written by Deputy Director, Claudia P. Pfeiffer.

Book: A Question of Balance.

A Question of Balance

by Walter T. Matia

A richly designed volume celebrating the life and work of Walter T. Matia.

“It is about the balance between the time I spend watching animals inthe wild and the hours spent in the studio. It is about finding the balance between representing anatomical facts, and seeking out what is truly artistic and beautiful in those gestures and compositions. It is about balancing what I know by ‘seeing’ with what I can imagine in a sculptural rendering of that knowledge.”Grays Sporting Journal (Oct 2021)

“The sculpture in the book chronicles a lifetime of icy mornings, blistered feet, torrid afternoons, chapped hands, great and not so great dogs, flipped canoes, wet sleeping bags, wonderful dinners, and the companionship of understanding and knowledgeable friends.”
