Mark and Barbara Fried have given more resources and encouragement toward my education then any dozen people deserve. In 2009 aided by a brilliant plant man David Phipps, we began to build a wonderful garden at their farm outside Charlottesville, Virginia.
Sculpture needs space to walk around it, moving light to play off and define its surfaces, architectural scale to show its mass, contrasting textures to highlight the qualities of metal. Sculpture needs a garden to bring it to life.
Over the years, we have enjoyed watching as plants matured and patinas aged creating a stunning landscape of nature and art. As a sculptor, I am ever impressed at the constant attention of David as he sculpts this living creation always working toward a harmony of manmade and natural objects.
